FINALLY IT'S MARCH
Finally it's March. Pic above of an abandoned mill in Sorrento, found here. Hopefully I'll be able to check it out in a few weeks when I travel down Italy's west coast.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
The blog has been on vacation for the past couple weeks -- I was in Munich and Paris for the holidays, returning back to London with the worst cold of my life. Luckily things are finally getting back to normal. Happy 2011!

STREET LEVEL

Originally a city of merchants, what seems to remain in Amsterdam is a culture of storefronts. As was pointed out to me on a recent visit there, many people living in Amsterdam make their homes street-level. In the 17th century flat glass was difficult to make and very expensive, so one can only assume the luxuriously large windows were afforded by trade wealth. Interestingly today these windows are not always covered, allowing one's life to be lived in the open, visible to any passerby. By extension, this openness could be what underpins the storefront prostitute -- women standing comfortably out of the elements yet still visible from the street. Photos: storefront houses built in the 17th century. I didn't intentionally try to include bikes in every photo btw, they're just everywhere.

STOCKHOLM DESIGN WEEK
Just returned home from Stockholm where I participated in Design Week with fellow artist & designer Melissa Gamwell as part of Designboom Mart. Melissa had her fabulous biography vase on offer, while I had hand screen printed organic cotton tote bags and my new book of drawings, both available from New Garde, for sale. Everyone we met was really awesome and we can't wait to go back to sthlm asap.

BUMMER

Feeling inspired by a recent trip to the Hayward Gallery's Ed Ruscha exhibition, I've made a few of my own out of photos taken from a trip to the Philippines earlier this year. Feeling a little down after a bout with the flu I suppose -- tomorrow is another day.
