SECA Award winner Ruth Laskey's work of finely detailed woven pieces are currently on display at the SFMOMA. On Thursday for the SECA reception, I also stopped by the Richard Serra retrospective happening on the (I think) 4th floor. Apparently Richard Serra has a reputation for being a hard-ass. Maybe he's just impatient?

Recently I happened on this Jackson Pollack exhibition catalogue at the Smithsonian Archive. Interesting how the cover looks like a title page. Mixed with the circus/kabel type treatment, altogether it's pretty great. The functional aesthetic of the title page is underestimated, I think.

Inverted values: Le Labo for Anthropologie Concrete Perfume packaging. I wonder if the concept of antique "measuring weights" was decided on before or after this was actually designed. Emphasizing the weight instead of the logo already speaks to an apothecary aesthetic -- was that alone not conceptual enough? Brings up interesting questions of concept and execution, I think. Also, probably wouldn't work without Grasse -- New York, even if they are an anti-brand. Altogether pretty packaging reminds me of other fave perfume solid -- In Fiore.

Love this product packaging found at Old Faithful Shop. Top: D.S. & Durga; bottom: Bonnie's Jams. When I checked out Bonnie's site, I found this great quote on her blog: "Like most people in business, I think about branding. So I was struck by Osama’s cave and hills branding strategy. In fact he lived in a villa with all the usual comforts." Tying into this, earlier this morning I happened to read an article from last year about Andy Spade: "'The bigger you get, the smaller you act.' [ie] The more personal a brand, the more stuff it can sell." Great news, but frankly I think I prefer the idea of business growing while keeping true to themselves rather than becoming big and then 'down branding'. Bonne Maman is a great example of this, have they ever changed their packaging? I don't think so.

Part of BBC's At Home with the Georgians, this amazing Missoni-like carpet covers the walls of an early bedroom closet at Chastleton House, built in 1612 for a wool merchant. Never renovated, the descendants lived there until 1991, preserving nearly 400 years in one house. The bottom still was taken en route to the bedroom in what seems to be a glorified hallway; love the intensely paneled walls, arch ceiling, and wood floors.

While searching for something else related to the Pitt-Rivers Museum in Oxford (see also: Night at the Museum), I discovered these interesting works from London-based illustrator Ellie Curtis. Lately I've become interested in printed fabrics and after Pompeii, am becoming increasingly interested in myth and folk styles. Lucky for me I've stumbled on a beautiful combination of these two ideas.
